Adani Energy Solutions Limited has snagged a massive tariff-based competitive bid worth around ₹8,500 crore (that's about US$880 million!) to help build the electrical backbone for green hydrogen and green ammonia facilities right in Andhra Pradesh’s Vizag area. Dubbed the “Transmission System for Proposed Green Hydrogen/Green Ammonia Projects in Vizag Area (Phase I),” this project is set to deliver around 4.5 GW of extra supply through a sprawling 1,582 circuit kilometres of 765/400 kV HVAC lines and two gas-insulated substations located in Pendurthi (Visakhapatnam) and Khammam-II. The wheels are already in motion through a special purpose vehicle called Vizag Power Transmission Ltd., with commissioning on the horizon in roughly 30 months.

Strategic Implications

Now, why does this matter? Well, this project tackles a key challenge in India’s quest to become a leading global hub for green hydrogen production and ammonia exports. Under the Union government’s National Green Hydrogen Mission, which aims for at least 5 million tonnes of green hydrogen by 2030, it’s crucial to have reliable high-capacity transmission to feed those electrolysers and Haber–Bosch units efficiently. By adding a whopping 10.5 GVA of transformation capacity, AESL is not just meeting the anticipated industrial demand but also boosting interstate grid stability. That means less congestion and reduced risks of bottling up renewable energy sources.

Technical Snapshot

Let’s break down the core assets involved in this project:

These smart components are going to channel power straight from regional renewable parks and existing pooling stations directly to hydrogen and ammonia plants, as well as those massive hyperscale data centers in the Pendurthi–Vizag corridor.

Policy and Market Context

This award fits neatly under the Government of India’s Interstate Transmission System framework. Tariff-based competitive bidding has become the go-to route for big grid expansions. It aligns perfectly with the MNRE incentives—like waiving transmission charges for renewable energy going into electrolysers and fast-tracking open access—which are all about reducing risks associated with project financing and boosting certainty for off-takers. On a national level, this transmission expansion also plays a vital role in supporting the broader Green Energy Corridor programme, which has already rolled out thousands of circuit kilometres to evacuate solar and wind energy capacity.

State-Level Push in Andhra Pradesh

Andhra Pradesh has made it clear that it wants to be India’s “Green Hydrogen Valley.” The state’s Integrated Clean Energy Policy, along with dedicated guidelines for green hydrogen and green ammonia, dangles some attractive incentives like capital subsidies, SGST reimbursements, and land support. Noteworthy projects include NTPC Green Energy’s Pudimadaka hub and AM Green’s ambitious US$10 billion ammonia complex in Kakinada. The Vizag system is going to ensure high-quality power delivery, which is crucial for attracting global offtakers and supporting these multi-billion-dollar investments.

This transmission deal solidifies Adani Energy Solutions as a key player in supporting India’s green hydrogen economy as well as the surge in digital infrastructure. By cleverly connecting policy incentives, state ambitions, and technical know-how, it sets the stage for future integrated projects where dependable hydrogen infrastructure and high-quality power delivery can thrive together.
