This is a big step towards scaling up green hydrogen production in line with China's ambitious clean energy goals. They’re looking to add about 200,000 tonnes of green methanol and 10,000 tonnes of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) each year. It’s all about harnessing renewable energy—turning wind and solar power into green hydrogen, gasifying local agricultural waste into syngas, and blending these to create low-carbon fuels. Making the most of wind, biomass, and hydrogen

This green methanol is making its way into shipping routes, thanks to a "Green Fuel Transport Corridor" linking Taonan to Dalian port and then on to Shanghai’s Yangshan port. Companies in the shipping industry are already signing up for preliminary agreements to secure steady, low-carbon bunker supplies.

Pioneering sustainable aviation fuel

As part of this phase, they’re also setting up a dedicated unit to produce sustainable aviation fuel, using that same biomass-hydrogen combination. Through Fischer–Tropsch synthesis and some fine-tuning, they’ll turn long-chain hydrocarbons into jet fuel. Airlines and airports in China are eager to secure these sustainable fuels for both domestic and international flights. With 10,000 tonnes of SAF to go around, Taonan is becoming a real example of how hydrogen energy news translates into tangible outcomes.

Through China’s hydrogen project financing framework, Phase II could benefit from direct capital subsidies of up to 20% of CAPEX. This will help ease the financial risks tied to developing more robust hydrogen infrastructure.

Combined with the initial 50,000 tonnes per year output of ISCC-certified green methanol from Phase I, Taonan is set to become a significant hub for green fuel production, setting an industry standard. As shipping lines and airlines grapple with stricter carbon regulations, having access to hydrogen-derived fuels will give them a competitive edge. This project positions Taonan as a powerhouse for green fuels and offers a replicable model for others looking to tap into biomass gasification and hydrogen production methods.

Optimizing the entire supply chain

By colocating wind farms, biomass gasifiers, electrolyzers, and synthesis units, Taonan reduces logistical hurdles and enhances energy efficiency. The oxygen produced during electrolysis is reused to fuel gasifier operations, and unreacted gases are cycled back into the methanol process. They’re also leveraging data analytics and advanced controls to optimize energy use and throughput in real-time. This closed-loop approach cuts down on both waste and operating costs.
