Solving real-world problems on non-electrified routes

This pilot project has turned the theoretical advantages of hydrogen fuel cells into a practical reality on the rails. Here’s the deal: they’re storing compressed hydrogen onboard, which then powers PEM fuel cells to convert that chemical energy into electricity that drives the train's motors. And guess what? The only thing it releases into the air is water vapor! So much for pollution; this represents a massive win in the world of clean hydrogen news. By ditching catenary wires, this system tackles one of the biggest hurdles in low-traffic or remote areas where full electrification just doesn't make sense.

The train itself is a 10-coach marvel, combining two hydrogen-powered power cars with eight passenger coaches, packing a total output of 2,400 kW. It’s good to go at speeds of up to 75 km/h while the engineers gather data on range, refueling cycles, and maintenance needs.
