OQ Gas Networks (OQGN) has just teamed up with Belgium’s energy heavyweight Fluxys to kick off a major step toward building a nationwide hydrogen infrastructure in Oman. It’s a strategic move that could fast-track the country's ambition to become a top global player in green hydrogen exports.

Hydrogen Infrastructure Deal Fuels Oman’s Vision 2040

This new partnership brings together OQGN—the company in charge of Oman’s natural gas pipelines—and Fluxys, one of Europe’s most experienced energy infrastructure firms. The goal? To lay down the foundation for a nationwide hydrogen transportation network that will carry clean fuel across the country—and eventually beyond its borders.

Slated to roll out starting in 2025, the project fits neatly into Oman’s National Hydrogen Strategy, a bold $140 billion roadmap that aims to crank out up to 1.5 million tonnes of clean hydrogen production every year by 2030. Thanks to Oman’s natural edge—plenty of sunshine and strong winds—it’s looking to ride the industrial decarbonization wave towards a more diverse and resilient economy under Vision 2040.

A Smart Team for a Big Job

This collaboration makes a lot of sense. OQGN brings in-depth knowledge about Oman’s local pipeline systems, while Fluxys brings serious experience from building hydrogen corridors across Belgium, Germany, and Greece. Together, they’re focused on safe, scalable hydrogen transport—starting domestically, and then setting sights on exports to energy-hungry regions like Europe and Asia.

The technical side of things is just as exciting. The plan is to repurpose parts of Oman’s existing gas network into hydrogen-ready pipeline systems. That’ll mean using materials tough enough to handle hydrogen over time, and rolling out smart tools like AI-powered leak detection for enhanced safety along the entire system.

Why It Matters… Globally

This deal isn’t happening in a vacuum. With Europe urgently searching for clean energy alternatives—especially after the Russian energy crunch—the timing couldn’t be better. The EU’s new Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) is already shaping how carbon-emitting imports are treated, giving countries like Oman that offer low-carbon solutions a head start.

“Oman’s not just building pipelines—it’s putting its industrial future on the line with green hydrogen,” noted one Gulf-based energy strategist. “This move could turn a local gas company into a global hydrogen powerhouse.”

What’s Coming Next: Hurdles and High Hopes

  • Land for Scale: Oman has designated 1,500 km² for hydrogen development zones—plenty of room to grow big, fast.
  • Electrolyzers, ASAP: Meeting production goals means rapidly scaling up electrolysis tech and boosting renewable power capacity to match.
  • Buyers Wanted: Long-term offtake deals—both for local industries and international buyers—will be critical to long-term success.

Despite the challenges, the upside is massive. We're talking more jobs, a surge in local manufacturing, and a sizable economy-wide boost. Plus, this initiative sets the stage for more cross-border hydrogen infrastructure projects across the MENA region and beyond.

Who’s Behind It

OQ Gas Networks is part of Oman’s OQ Group, and plays a central role in managing the country’s pipeline infrastructure—including its expanding focus on hydrogen transportation. The company is one of the key drivers of Oman’s clean energy shift and industrial decarbonization.

Fluxys is a European energy infrastructure leader with core operations in Belgium and extended footprints in Germany, Greece, and beyond. In recent years, it’s been making big moves into hydrogen and CO₂ transportation, supporting Europe’s big push under the Green Deal.

What’s on the Horizon

From domestic pipelines to global supply chains, this Gulf-Europe partnership is proof that green hydrogen is no longer a pipe dream—it’s becoming a real, investable future. Expect more major updates soon on pipeline mapping, electrolyzer rollouts, and new export terminals.

Bottom line? Oman’s not just in the hydrogen game—it’s building the playbook.
