Hydrogen produced at the Cachimayo plant is used to synthesize ammonia, which then serves as the main feedstock for producing ammonium nitrate, a key component of ANFO (ammonium nitrate–fuel oil) explosives widely used in mining.[1][4] Enaex emphasizes that Cachimayo is the only plant in Peru producing ANFO-grade ammonium nitrate and that this ammonium nitrate is a fundamental input for the mining explosives supplied to its clients.[4][7]

The green status of Cachimayo’s hydrogen hinges on electricity supplied under arrangements that certify the energy as renewable, implemented in partnership with Engie.[4][7] This approach relies on power purchase agreements (PPAs) and certification mechanisms that guarantee the origin of the electricity used for electrolysis and plant operations.

Enaex has implemented catalysts at Cachimayo designed to reduce emissions of nitrous oxide (N2O), a potent greenhouse gas generated during nitric acid and ammonium nitrate production.[4] Company statements indicate that these catalysts can mitigate between 92% and 95% of N2O emissions by converting N2O into harmless nitrogen and oxygen.[4]
