Hydrogen fuel cells are moving beyond the lab and into the real world in a big way—especially in China’s heavy-duty transport scene. On July 14, 2025, Horizon Fuel Cell Group inked a major deal with Shanghai Wuliu Automotive Technology to supply 100 of its advanced VL-III Series hydrogen fuel cell systems. These next-gen power units are set to drive a fleet of long-haul, 42-ton zero-emission trucks made by Z Truck Automotive Technology.

What's all the buzz about? These trucks promise something that’s long been out of reach—an eye-popping 1,500+ kilometers of range on a single hydrogen fill. That’s a serious answer to one of the biggest gripes about hydrogen vehicles: they just didn’t go the distance. Until now.

Tackling the Tough Stuff in Green Freight

Any attempt to clean up long-haul trucking has hit a few big roadblocks—range limitations, lack of infrastructure, heavy batteries eating into payloads, and the challenge of staying competitive on performance. This new project aims to bulldoze those barriers. The VL-III Series fuel cell features a high-efficiency PEM stack that’s already been put through its paces around the world. And the hydrogen is stored in feather-light Type IV composite tanks, which are built to be safe and space-conscious without compromising cargo or cabin space.

But there’s more going on here than just exciting hardware. This move is part of a nationwide push in China—a full-court press on hydrogen infrastructure, increased deployment of new energy vehicles (NEVs), and a broader effort to clean up industrial emissions. Long-haul trucks are still some of the worst offenders when it comes to pollution, especially those running on diesel. This rollout is a bold step in a new direction.

Sending a Message to Markets and Policymakers

Now, it’s true that hydrogen’s still finding its footing in the passenger car market. But in the world of heavy-duty trucks and commercial fleets? Hydrogen’s gaining serious traction. This three-way partnership—between fuel cell maker Horizon, vehicle builder Z Truck, and fleet operator Shanghai Wuliu—shows that the supply chain is growing up and getting things done.

This agreement isn’t just about putting trucks on the road—it shows that fuel cell technology is breaking out of its experimental shell. Horizon's VL-III has been out in the field since 2022, and with the company already operating globally, there’s solid footing for wider adoption. These long-range trucks throw down a serious challenge to diesel’s long reign in regional and national freight. It's true the costs aren’t fully equal across the board yet, but when you factor in operational uptime, tailored duty cycles, and smart hydrogen storage, the total cost of ownership (TCO) starts to tip firmly in hydrogen’s favor—especially in fast-moving Chinese logistics networks.

Hydrogen Tech is Gaining Speed

And this is just the beginning. Horizon is already working on the next iteration: the VLS-IV 400kW fuel cell platform. It’s expected to cut hydrogen use by up to 20% and stretch the system’s lifespan even further. For fleet operators used to razor-thin margins, that’s a game-changer—lower operating and capital costs mean quicker returns and cleaner operations.

We don’t yet know exactly where these trucks will hit the roads, but sources suggest they’ll operate in China’s hard-charging logistics corridors—particularly in powerhouse regions like the Yangtze and Pearl River Delta. These industrial zones are some of the first to benefit from state-backed hydrogen highways and growing networks of refueling stations.

China’s on the Fast Track with Heavy-Duty Hydrogen

As the world’s biggest car market, China has both the scale and the muscle to push zero-emission technology forward at record pace. With strong government backing—central and local—plus subsidies, pilot projects, and public-private partnerships, the pieces are all falling into place for a widespread rollout of hydrogen-powered trucks.

And it’s part of a bigger picture. The country’s 14th Five-Year Plan includes specific goals to advance zero-emission vehicles and expand hydrogen infrastructure, including heavy transport. That makes this project more than a milestone—it’s part of a blueprint for what comes next.

Looking Ahead

Keep your eyes on the upcoming Hydrogen Energy and Fuel Cell Expo China 2025. It’s expected to spotlight cutting-edge breakthroughs in hydrogen storage, electrolysis, and system integration. This 100-truck launch? It may just be phase one. Bigger orders and broader commercial deployments could be right around the corner in 2026 and beyond.

For global fleet operators and OEMs paying attention—now’s the time to take notes. What gets rolled out in China today could shape global fuel cell technology standards tomorrow.
